What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins develop when the small valves inside veins stop working properly and blood pools in the vein. They can appear as visible, raised veins, but also cause heavy legs, swelling or pain, especially later in the day. Without treatment, they gradually worsen and can lead to more serious complications.
How varicose veins appear
Visible, raised blue-purple veins are only one sign, and often not the first. Earlier signs usually include:
- heavy, tired legs, especially in the afternoon and evening
- swelling around the ankles
- night cramps in the calves
- burning, itching or tingling around the veins
- symptoms worsening in heat or after prolonged standing
Untreated varicose veins worsen over time. More advanced disease can cause darkened, hardened skin on the lower leg, vein inflammation or a leg ulcer that heals poorly and may take months to treat. That is why it makes sense to seek an examination even if the veins currently seem only cosmetic.
How examination and treatment work at Venova
Vein clinic – 1 500 CZK
A surgeon conducts the examination, rather than a sonographer alone. It includes a painless duplex ultrasound of the leg veins that shows which veins are not working, where blood flows backwards and the condition of the deep venous system.
Treatment recommendation
The doctor explains the findings and recommends treatment based on the extent of the condition and your overall health. Mild cases may call for compression stockings and lifestyle measures; more advanced cases may need surgery.
Operation
When surgery is medically indicated, it is covered by public health insurance. The surgeon chooses the method individually based on your examination.
Follow-up after surgery
You return to our clinic and the same team that operated on you.
Common patient questions
Will varicose veins disappear on their own or with creams?
No. Ointments, gels and herbal products may ease the feeling of heavy legs, but they cannot repair a damaged valve or an enlarged vein.
Can varicose veins return after surgery?
Surgery removes the affected part of a vein. An inherited tendency can remain, so new varicose veins may appear elsewhere over the years. Regular movement, compression during prolonged standing and follow-up examinations reduce the risk.
Does health insurance cover varicose vein surgery?
Yes. If the surgeon recommends surgery after examination, medically indicated procedures are provided under public health insurance. A vein clinic visit costs 1 500 CZK and includes a surgeon consultation with ultrasound examination of the leg veins.
